Fredrik's Ultra Journey Through Sweden's Blue Mountains

Fredrik Åkerstrand is an ultra runner and adventurer based in Örebro, Sweden. A city most of the world has never heard of, but one that sits at the edge of some of the most beautiful trail running terrain in Scandinavia. He is about to change that.

But before the trails, before the early morning runs through old-growth forests and over moss-covered boulders, there was burnout. Fredrik's journey into ultra running is not a story about chasing podiums or personal records. It is a story about survival. About trading the relentless pressure of modern life for something more honest. Movement became his medicine. The trail became his therapist. And somewhere along the way, running became a sustainable way of living rather than just a sport.

"My journey is all about trading stress for presence. Moving from burnout to a sustainable lifestyle through ultra-running."

Today Fredrik runs not to escape, but to arrive. He is passionate about exploring trails and finding mental strength through movement. He is an ambassador for the Gbg Trailrun race and a frequent guest on the Swedish running podcast Löpning och Livet, where he shares his journey from exhaustion to endurance with a growing community of runners who recognise themselves in his story.

Fredrik is building his running community in Örebro. As one of ZealZag's first Founding Zaggers in Sweden, he will be creating sessions and events in Örebro that visiting athletes can join directly through the platform.

Where Should You Run in Örebro?

Örebro sits in central Sweden, three hours west of Stockholm. It is not a city that appears on most runners' bucket lists yet. But just outside the city lies Kilsbergen, a mountain range the locals call The Blue Mountains, and within it some of the most raw and untouched trail running in all of Scandinavia.

Fredrik knows these trails the way most people know their own street. Here is what awaits the athlete brave enough to find their way to Örebro.

What Makes Ånnaboda Special for Trail Runners?

"My favorite area is Kilsbergen, specifically the trails around Ånnaboda. It is special to me because of the raw, untouched nature. Running through the old-growth forests and over the moss-covered boulders gives me a sense of deep calm and connection that I have not found anywhere else."

Ånnaboda is the access point into the heart of Kilsbergen. The trails here are technical and demanding. Roots, rocks, and undulating terrain that demands full attention and rewards full effort. The old-growth forest is dense and quiet, the kind of quiet that feels earned. Between the trees, hidden forest lakes appear without warning, their surfaces still and dark, perfect for wild swimming after a long run.

Why Is Rusakulan the Viewpoint Every Runner Needs to See?

"There is a spot called Rusakulan with a vast view over the landscape. Standing there after a tough climb, looking out over the endless treetops, is a powerful reminder of why I run. It is about trading stress for that exact moment of presence and perspective."

Rusakulan is the summit that justifies every hard kilometre on the way up. The climb is steep and rooted, the kind that empties the mind of everything except the next step. Then the trees break open and the landscape stretches out beneath you. Endless treetops, rolling hills, a horizon that seems to have no end. It is the moment Fredrik runs for. It is the moment every athlete who makes the journey to Örebro will understand completely.

What Will a Visiting Athlete Experience in Kilsbergen?

"A visitor would experience true Swedish wilderness. The terrain is technical and challenging with lots of roots and rocks, but the reward is the breathtaking views from the heights and the peacefulness of the hidden forest lakes."

This is not a destination for runners seeking flat, fast, or easy. The trails of Kilsbergen demand respect and reward commitment. Visitors should expect technical footing, significant elevation, and the kind of solitude that has become rare in modern trail running. In return they receive something that cannot be manufactured. Genuine Swedish wilderness, unchanged and unhurried.

How Do You Get to Örebro?

Örebro is easily reached by train from Stockholm in under three hours or from Gothenburg in approximately two and a half hours. The Kilsbergen nature reserve is accessible by car or local bus from the city centre, with Ånnaboda serving as the main trailhead.

The best running season runs from May through October when the trails are clear and the forest lakes are swimmable. Winter brings snow and a completely different kind of beauty. Silent, white, and deeply atmospheric for those equipped for cold weather running.
